Hastings Ore Valley Adventure Playground to the users
East have handed over the completed Hastings Ore Valley Adventure Playground to the users. The design of the building and external spaces has been developed by a design team lead by architects East, with young people at Sandown School, Broomgrove Community Centre and The Bridge, after a design team selection process which involved the young users as well as the adult client team. The outside area will continue to evolve with the community and children’s participation, as a space that children own and are empowered to shape and design. The building and playground offer a variety of inclusive play opportunities including places where children can build their own structures with storage containers full of tools and equipment, quiet areas, wild nature areas, water play, a fire pit, slides, zip line, places for digging and making dens. All trees will be retained on the site, and made use of for playing and growing food.
Piazza Del Ponte win - 14 October 2010
Sergison Bates and East have won the competition to redesign Piazza Del Ponte in Mendrisio, Switzerland. The collaborative team beat five other teams to develop a scheme which includes a new public square and City Library. The new square will include materials already employed across the city, using a shared surface of granite setts, lined with bands of constrasting stone, designed to accommodate a variety of activities-from cinema screenings to the annual Easter procession. Large cast iron seating areas will help slow cars down as well as bring the sound of the hidden river to the surface. Catenary lighting, seating, and a new shape to the square will help restore this space as the heart of Mendrisio.
