The existing building in Islington is an unusual 1980’s end of terrace u-shaped bungalow; the front elevation however gives the impression of being two storeys through the provision of two sets of windows.
The client wanted to extend the building with extra bedroom and studio space. They were also influenced by their daughters desire to live in a ‘building with a staircase’.
This proposal for a two storey addition, in brick and zinc, extends one leg of the u-shaped plan vertically to provide two new bedrooms, with en-suite bathroom, and releases space downstairs in conjunction with an improved entrance. The curious, warm and intimate quality of the existing building is expanded and taken into another dimension.
A canopy allows part of the courtyard to become enclosed or sheltered using a sliding door.
Planting screens are used to improve the clarity of the boundaries to the property whilst retaining views through.
