Arts and community building competition entry.
The Sunlight Centre is an industrial Victorian building originally built as a laundry. The brief defined by the North Kent Architecture Centre focussed on developing a strategy and a design proposal for its re-use.
Our proposal was to link the centre with the nearby railway station and to make a series of new generous internal spaces, without doors, but able to be re-adjusted using full height screens.
Into this space we inserted black boxes for those uses requiring sound control and extra security. To help fund the works we proposed rebuilding the end of the building up into residential and live-work accommodation.
