Tufnell Park Classrooms

A series of new suitability and accessibility measures extend small classrooms and improve access to this North London School with ramps, paths and canopies. These measures, devised as a strategic approach to be implemented over time, complement a new nursery building completed earlier on the same site, also by East.

Southern classrooms give on to small play yards which are intimate and shaded by trees. New timber and glass extensions have opened up views of trees at the elevated green bund. Wide painted timber doors set at projecting ends of the extensions enable classroom edges to become like open covered colonnades in warm weather. The extensions have been used to strengthen the relationship between inside and outside making yards and classrooms equivalent in their role for the school. New routes and paths have revalidated this edge as a promenade to be enjoyed.

On the north side of the school, a new timber and polycarbonate canopy gives shelter from excessive solar glare and allows pupils to be outside in the rain.
