Whitechapel shop

A successful application for a conservation grant from Tower Hamlets for the renovation of a shopfront in its Corridor CAP Scheme area. The design picks up on qualities such as the 1960’s grooved aluminium cladding and painted signs, the grey 1940’s render, the 1890’s stucco work, and the medieval urban grain of the streets and yards.

We argued that the entire chronology of changes to the shopfront over the years is valid and enjoyable, and that it should not be just about restoring elements from the original facade.
A second stage of the work developed a proposal to convert the upper spaces to live work uses. The complex collage of styles and history influenced the way in which light was made available and new spaces defined.
