Acton Town Square

One of Mayor's 100 Public Spaces - public realm strategy, consultation and public space design. The project is about renewing Acton Town Square as a functioning public space. Proposals open up and animate the space with kiosks, shops, cafes, bars, market stalls and space for public events as part of a wider Public Realm Strategy developed in parallel. To retain an uncluttered feel, trees, walls, bollards and planters are kept to a minimum. Seating is created using the same material as the ground. The sloping ground is clad using large triangular planes as a large roof on the hill.

A façade of shops on the southern side of the Uxbridge Road forms a third major elevation to the square. Including the road space within the space through consistent ground treatment will allow a bus/tram stop to be located in the square at a later date. Trees are located to include the churchyard space as part of the square. A special aspect to this project is a phasing strategy that has included an early phase of enabling works to make the space useable for markets (with specially designed Acton market stalls) and events this summer by removing one of the major planters and some of the trees, putting in temporary paving - that carefully matches the existing - and a new permanent flower kiosk. Main works are scheduled to begin in January 2006.
