The concept for the public realm focuses on the existing place, and in particular the market, which has a rich history, and which continued to trade during the all construction phases of the new development. To accommodate the antiques market, and any new markets or events on the square, it is essential to retain flexibility in the space, whilst providing an attractive, truly public realm at all times of the year.

A dark toned background of clay brick paving acts as a corded ‘baize’ running beneath the shiny trinkets that comprise the furniture in the space, reminiscent of the silver ware and shiny glazes of the crockery for sale on the stalls.

The trinkets are realised as objects providing seating while deterring vehicle entry to the square. Elsewhere, fixed timber benches provide permanent infrastructure for seating and meeting; situated to tie in with the 200 stall market itself. A boules pit, cycle storage and new lighting, all add to the functionality and delight of the space.
