Charlton Estate

East with Janet Jack Landscape Architects carried out a historic landscape restoration survey and study for five linked open spaces in Greenwich, which once formed part of the Charlton House Estate, the centrepiece of which is a Jacobean Manor House that was sold to Greenwich Council in 1923.
The proposals in this study focus on reconnecting and consolidating a varied and unusual series of parks and open spaces through a strategic programme of costed improvements and restoration.

The collection of spaces is amazing and still a London secret; an SSSI gravel pit sits next to the park where Antonioni filmed ‘Blow Up’, which adjoins the ancient woodland remnants of Maryon Wilson Park; famous for its highwaymen and today enjoyed for its zoo. These lead to the Thames Barrier via a space reserved for shipstrike works. Charlton House and grounds forms the centrepiece and sits north of the 1930’s Hornfair Park and Lido.
The study formed the supporting information to a bid for Heritage Lottery funding made by Greenwich Council.
Two pilot projects to make new entrances to Charlton House Grounds, and improve linkage with Charlton Village were completed in 2003; designed by East.
