A consultation and masterplan for new development and associated environmental improvement at a mixed age housing estate in Redbridge, with Newham Council and the tenants. Situated close to Epping Forest and within the Wanstead Flats, Aldersbrook Estate benefits from open green spaces, trees, and a sense of the countryside. Whilst there is an understandable reluctance from the existing tenants to see any new development here the council is under pressure to consider what options are possible.

East's task was to negotiate this tension and seek to define proposals for new development and estate improvements that are beneficial and acceptable to both parties. Proposals include extending existing buildings to improve the urban structure at the corners of the estate, reallocating car parking spaces, rationalising routes through the estate, strengthening the physical definition of the large expanses of grass and trees, and incorporating new buildings to the rear of the estate to replace hidden and unsafe garages, and form a new active backdrop.
