Barking has not yet realised its potential for change. Constricted as a town centre, it seems smaller than it is. It suffers from a fragmented urban structure, and has all but forgotten about its historic river. The high level of transport accessibility, the need for better housing able to accommodate a more diverse tenure, and its prominent location in the Thames Gateway together demand change.

This Framework is currently being taken forward in the form of Interim Planning Guidance by Barking and Dagenham Council and provides a Framework for future development of employment, retail, leisure and residential uses.
We considered the way in which Barking would change over the next 20 years to meet an ambitious future not only for those who live there now, but for those who will want and need to live there in the future. We suggested a number of strategies and objectives to do this, illustrated with possible scenarios.
This study was carried out in collaboration with Sergison Bates Architects.
