Bethnal Green Railway Arches

A study of the Bethnal Green Railway arches carried out for London Borough of Tower Hamlets and Cityside Regeneration. The task was to scope, design and cost a series of proposals and opportunities to improve the railway viaduct environment.
As part of the work we mapped the uses of the railway arches in Bethnal Green and identified possibilities for relocation of noisy uses, establishing new community uses in arches on the edge of Bethnal Green Gardens.

We suggested that some of the available funds were used to pay to keep the railway arches open to cover lost rent thereby improving linkage. We also proposed a ‘tidy up’ strategy for the arch facades, and proposals for a series of tall buildings; companions to the railway, to help fund the works. We also proposed a strip of lights that would correspond to, and be triggered by, the movement of the trains, and a number of dot matrix signs to sign the entrances to the railway environment and give information on events and the place.
