TRLN Streetscape Guidance

East worked with Transport for London to produce a catalogue of design guidance and construction details of all aspects that go toward the making of the public streetscape realm of the Transport for London Road Network. This document was complemented by a report for consultation with all London boroughs. The document will launched by Ken Livingstone in 2005.

The aim of the document was to help ensure that this special aspect of the public realm could be as simple and functional as possible. By encouraging consistency across different parts of London, a radical and generous difference can be made by making gentle and subtle design adjustments.

Measures are used such as recommending that all steel elements of the street furniture are painted the same colour, suggested employment of a much simpler palette of materials than is commonly used, inclusion of shaped and curved granite kerbs to negotiate the space between pedestrians, cyclists and private vehicles, and the adjustment and improvement of detailing of standard products to avoid unnecessary styling.

This project was developed in conjunction with engineers The Project Centre Ltd.
