The Barking strategy and framework was taken forward in the form of Interim Planning Guidance by Barking and Dagenham Council and provided a Framework for future development of employment, retail, leisure and residential uses. We considered the way in which Barking might change over the next 20 years to meet an ambitious future not only for those who live there now, but for those who would want and need to live there in the future.
East suggested a number of strategies and objectives to do this, illustrated with possible scenarios. The work study was carried out in collaboration with Sergison Bates Architects.
In particular the study has helped guide new development and public realm improvements over several years, including the town centre buildings and spaces designed by AHMM and Muf.
Over time, the Borough has gained confidence through the high quality outcome; further proposals include East’s work in designing imperovements to East Street, aimed at linking the station through to Abbey Green, and providing one of the missing links for Barkings’s successful urban structure.
