Eltham High Street earns its stripes

The new public realm improvements at Eltham High Street are nearing substantial completion. One of the highlights of the project is a new generous public space at Passey Place, with a distinctive patterned carpet-like surface which extends across the High Street at a new wide signalised crossing. Designed to deter vehicular speeds, and encourage pedestrian priority, the design has stimulated a range of responses; from Daily Mail headlines “crossing with ‘stripes going the wrong way’, to “It’s great. We hope it brings in tourists like the Leaning Tower of Pisa…”
