East were comissioned by Havering Council to prepare a Step 1 TfL Major Schemes Bid for improvements to the A1306 New Road running east – west between Rainham and Barking and Dagenham. The Beam Park area adjacent to this part of the A1306 is a designated Housing Zone for which development principles are currently being prepared by UES. The proposed scheme for the A1306 is intended to establish an improved and attractive context for the Housing Zone encouring investment into the Beam Park area and giving shape to enjoyable and convenient location for living.
East developed a strategy that aimed to build-upon what was already exciting and particular to the area – its vast marsh and wetland landscapes and unique mix of uses – alongside new uses and amenities that will be delivered in the immediate future including the new Beam Park Station. A time-based strategy was proposed that brought the A1306 into a continuous dialogue with the emerging development framework; using landscape and highway improvements to help establish a context for development, and for new developments to contribute to the evolving landscape. The Beam Parkway project proposed five key spaces along the road tailored to the existing and future roles for the area; a new town square, an urban park, two pocket parks and an extended wild habitat.
