Drawing the Urban
The symposium is part of a research project funded by the Swiss National Fund, entitled ‘Codes and conventions for future Zurich. A Propositional Planning Approach to Qualitative Densification. The project is a collaboration between the Academia di Architettura
Mendrisio (Jonathan Sergison) and ETH (Prof. Tom Avermaete), and Dr Irina Davidovici (Director GTA Archive) and doctoral co-supervisor, Dr Giulia Scotto (AAM) and two Phd candidates, Sanna Kattenbeck (ETH) and Miriam Stierler (AAM). This conference symposium will investigate the multiple ways in which recent and current urban conditions are represented, analysed, and informed, through drawings. Among the multiplicity of urban processes constantly and simultaneously shaping the built environment, particular interest is in dynamics of urban expansion and densification (whether top-down and bottom-up) as well as shrinkage, exclusion, land speculation, and gentrification. Keynote Speakers: Kristian Borret (Bouwmeester- Maitre Architecte of the Brussels- Capital Region), Julian Lewis (East architecture, landscape urban design Itd), and Huda Tayob (Manchester School of Architecture).
